Evros – Where Three Worlds Meet
What would it feel like to stand in a place where three countries touch? Where life flows with the simplicity of everyday moments, where people welcome you with warm hearts, under skies that stretch over wild rivers, forests, and endless natural beauty.
Greece 🇬🇷 – Turkey 🇹🇷 – Bulgaria 🇧🇬 Three nations divided by a river, and right in the middle lies a vast piece of land called Evros.
This is where our journey begins — from the very top of the map, and slowly, we make our way south. Let’s discover as much as we can about the northernmost border of Greece, a place filled with history, flavor, and soul.
🏞️Between Rivers and Borders: Orestiada Region
Orestiada – Where History Tastes Better
Greece’s youngest city, Orestiada may be new in years, but it's built on centuries of memory — founded by Greek refugees from Eastern Rumelia, carrying with them not only pain, but recipes, songs, and spirit.
Surrounded by charming border villages and flanked by two gateways — one to Bulgaria, the other to Turkey — Orestiada is more than a border city.
It’s a cultural bridge, shaped by crossings and coexistence.
And right through its heart flows the Ardas River, not just a waterway, but a stream of stories, music, and traditions — a river of culture that nourishes both land and soul.
But let’s be honest — in Evros, we don’t just explore…
We eat.
So here, we’ll focus on what matters most
👑When Emperors Met Tradition and Journeyed East Aboard the Orient Express
Didymoteicho – “Three times the capital of Byzantium” – a land of endless history, where emperors once began their journeys of conquest.
Alongside it stand Metaxades, Karoti, and Asvestades – three birthplaces of cultural tradition. Titans that connect the past with the present, keeping the soul of heritage alive.
And finally, Pythio – the place where the legendary Orient Express was blown up, in its race toward the East, leaving behind myths and whispers carried by the winds of Evros.
🌻Soufli: A Town Woven with Silk
Soufli stands out for its architectural richness and its deep-rooted connection to silk. The impressive buildings, landmark museums, and the unique flavors of the local gastronomy make it a one-of-a-kind destination in the region of Evros.
In the surrounding mountainous area, picturesque villages reflect the essence of the humble shepherd’s life, embraced by natural beauty and echoing the pride of a people who, though often overlooked, have never lost their love for the land.
Tychero, the birthplace of international footballer Manolis Siopis, enchants visitors with its peaceful lake—a place well worth visiting for moments of tranquility and connection with nature.
Lastly, the renowned Dadia Forest, famous for its rich biodiversity and rare birds of prey, continues to captivate visitors despite the scars left by the devastating wildfire of 2023. The forest remains one of the most exceptional destinations for those seeking the serenity of the landscape, a connection with the wild, and opportunities for hiking and birdwatching.
🌅Alexandroupoli – A Cosmopolitan Port of Contrasts
With its iconic lighthouse gazing over the Thracian Sea, Alexandroupoli stands proud at the crossroads of cultures. A fast-growing city full of life and energy, it offers something for every taste — from peaceful seaside strolls to rich culinary and cultural experiences.
Sometimes, all it takes is one visit… to set sail with her.
🥩 Steaks & Statues = Evritians Suvenirs
You simply can't visit Evros without tasting the local meat — it’s a true trademark of the region.
Kavourmas and traditional sausages are a flavor-packed experience all on their own, rich in tradition and crafted with care.
Below are just a few suggestions I’ve personally tried — but trust me, there’s so much more to discover. Evros hides many more delicious secrets... if you're willing to explore!
