After spending seven months in Portugal, I want to share with you an incredible place that most tourists don’t know about and, unfortunately, never get to discover. Just a short distance outside the center of Lisbon lies the westernmost point of Europe — a place called Cabo da Roca.
You take the train from Lisbon’s station (cais do sodre) to a town called Sintra. From there, you catch the bus number 1624 and get off at Cabo da Roca . After a 5–10 minute walk, you’ll arrive at the most breathtaking edge of Europe — a perfect spot to watch the sunset and gaze out at the endless blue of the Atlantic Ocean.
Most people, however, only stay at that viewpoint and don’t realize that there’s a hidden gem right next to it: a stunning secluded beach that remains unknown to many.
Make sure to wear proper shoes and comfortable clothes for walking and climbing. Pack a backpack with plenty of water, food, and whatever else you need — and most importantly, don’t forget your swimsuit!
You’ll begin by climbing a small mountain and hill via a path that starts on the right-hand side of the road, at the entrance of the area. Then begins the fun part: the descent. If at any point you lose your sense of direction, just ask a local for help — they’ll point you the right way.
These days, the spot has started to gain the recognition it deserves, so you’ll likely see others heading down to the beach — feel free to follow them.
I’ll admit, the descent can be a bit challenging — it involves walking down rocky paths and narrow trails, and at some parts, you’ll even need to use a rope to go down. But don’t worry, it’s not as scary as it sounds!
The hike down takes around 30 minutes, but the view is absolutely worth it!
Make sure to go early in the morning, so you have time to swim, relax, and enjoy the beach before heading back up at sunset magical photos!

Berlengas Island
Another amazing place, a bit farther from Lisbon this time, is the Berlengas Islands. We went there by car, but you can easily do the trip by bus as well.
You head to the town of Peniche, and from there, you take the ferry, which goes directly to the islands.
The island itself isn’t very big, so I’d recommend taking one of the cruises offered there. They take you around the entire island and through beautiful sea caves and crystal-clear green waters.
You can swim and take some of the most stunning photos!
Once again, my advice is to come prepared — bring the right clothes, plenty of water, food, and of course, your swimsuit.
It’s a truly beautiful excursion if you have the time and energy for it.
The landscapes, the beaches, and the views will stay with you forever.
