Tinos, the handmade Island 🪨
I’ve spent every summer of my life in Tinos. Both my parents are from there, my mom from Tripotamos and Triantaros, and my dad from Marlás (technically Pyrgos).
Tinos, the island Cornelius Castoriadis once called “handmade”, is a magical place. And it was magical long before it got hyped and the hipster-cool, semi-gentrified spots opened up. Back then, it was just a few of us enjoying it.
The island has a rich history, loads of art, amazing food, endless natural beauty, and incredible architecture, just don’t expect to find much of that in the main town (Chora).
The little snake emoji is a throwback to ancient times, when the island was known as Ophiousa, because of all the snakes that lived (and still do) there.
Must-see villages 🏘️
Tinos is full of villages, each with its own story to tell. Whether it’s the architecture, the food, or just the incredible vibe, most of them have something special to offer. Take your time and explore them on foot.
Wild Beaches 🏝️
There’s this urban legend that Tinos doesn’t have great beaches; just because it’s not known for them. False. Tinos isn’t famous for its beaches simply because every island in the Cyclades has nice beaches, and Tinos has so much more to show beyond that.
That said, if you’re up for a bit of a trek, there are some truly beautiful unorganized beaches worth the effort, just be warned, it often gets insanely windy, which can be exhausting.
Organized Beaches 🏖️
The nice organized beaches, if you’re not into the whole posh, flashy vibe.
Brunch outside Chora 🍳
If you’re away from the main town (Chōra) and looking for coffee, brunch, or breakfast, these are all fantastic spots. My personal favorite is Mayou; it’s in an amazing location with incredible views and some of the best orange pie around.
Traditional Tavernas 👅
Traditional island-style Tinian food. All of these places are great, I’ll even tell you what to order.
Seafood 🦞
Sometimes seafood takes a back seat in Tinos, not because there isn’t great seafood, but because the traditional home-cooked dishes are just that good. Here, though, you’ll get seriously good seafood.
